1. Realize your lever is close to the handle bars and brakes sound like rocks grinding on steel.
2. Go to bike shop and buy two sets of pads for $50. Exclaim that you can get pads for your mazda from rock auto for the same price and they last 40,000 miles not 4 months.
3. Remove wheel and remove old pads, then see if you can push in the pistons far enough so the new brake pads don’t rub.
4. Install new pads and wheel, realize they really need to be bled. New brakes usually are pretty good but typically need to be bled when installing the first pair of replacement pads.
5. Watch YouTube video on how to bled SRAM Guide brakes.
6. Bleed brakes then try pads again!
7. Success now the lever feels firm.
8. Repeat process for rear brakes.
9. Then do your kids bike.
10. Then do your other bike.
11. Realize you have spent $150 on bicycle parts in the last week.
12. That bleed kit saved some time and money tho...

Oof, how much was the bleed kit. My next bike sure as hell will have hydraulic brakes but I havent bled any
since I was working at a shop and had an epic set of tools.

I had no idea hydraulic bike brakes were a thing, that’s pretty cool actually

I got the shop quality kit and I think it was $80. Since I’ve had the kit I’ve probably used it a dozen times so money well spent so far.

Yes they have been a thing for a while.

Get Shimano.
I think their
bleed kits are a lot cheaper. And I like mineral oil vs the paint removing DOT fluid.

You didn’t have to replace rotors given the grinding sound? So many new bike procedures to learn.
I’m not looking forward
to a bleed. Thanks for posting this.

They were close but not metal on metal yet... I’ve had to do rotors on the past.

My only experience with disc brakes is with mechanical calipers. Way easier (though my understanding is they suck compared to hydraulic)

I’ve never tried mechanical discs so I can’t say, but 4 piston hydraulic brakes are pretty amazing.

Ok. First off, I’m pretty drunk right now. 2nd, I think I can change the rotors and pads on my Focus in less time. 3rd, I’m having a guy who I go to church with tune up my bikes, cause that looks too god damn hard.

By now I’m in the 10 minute per wheel range including a quick bleed. If I didn’t have to bleed the brakes this would be a less than ten minute task but I have not found a better way to get the pistons to retract. IIRC my older style shimano brakes with only two pistons are a lot easier to get the pistons retracted than these 4 piston sram brakes.
